Wow. The phone rings and the caller ID says "Aardvark Vanaheim" and I'm like "huh, is this Dave Sim?" After all this time I have a poker face about these things you wouldn't believe. I answer and it is indeed Dave Sim and he wants to make sure I know about his new comic coming for order shortly called Glamourpuss. I reminded him that he'd actually been at one of our AcmeCon conventions here in the 1980s (before my time though) and he said he remembered. And I of course mentioned that we stocked his Cerebus trades, we sold one as recently as Saturday. Though he doesn't have email, he did take my name and confirm my address so he could send us a signed preview copy of Glamourpuss to display to people. I'm not a Cerebus fan, but I acknowledge Dave Sim's contribution to independent comic publishing (Cerebus was the longest running independently published comic series) and greatly respect him for personally calling comic shops to promote his material. If you want me to carry your comic, call me, send me something that's not a form letter. Show that kind of initiative and excitement and I'll try your stuff. So now I'll definitely throw in behind Sim's new project where before I might have initially gone very light or passed completely.
I love my job.
