Acme First Look #49 for 10.15.08

So apparently WFMY News 2 did a story about the Barack Obama and John McCain one-shots from IDW and told everyone to come to us to get it. We love that. Unfortunately, we had already sold out of the Obama book yesterday and McCain went first thing this morning, but there is a re-order on its way! If you still need a copy (or multiples), you need to get in touch with us so we can add you to the queue that's growing by the minute!

I briefly mentioned it in the e-mail this week, but we're just three weeks away from the one year anniversary of the still-new and improved AcmeComics.com! I'm planning a lot of stuff for the occasion, namely a week full of new content every day.

Orson Scott Card just stopped by. Wizard.

Stephen's So-Called Emo Life!

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (the book) - it mixes the capricious, stream-of-consciousness, unabashed and unforgiving adolescent bravado of Catcher in the Rye with High Fidelity's musical sense of time, place, emotion, and eternity. A quick read, and refreshingly affordable at just $7.99 for the non-movie cover.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (the movie) - I ended up seeing it twice. At it's best moments, it channels all of the sentiments of Clerks, Slacker, Garden State, Can't Hardly Wait, Dazed and Confused, etc., etc. Some reviews would have you believe it's run-of-the-mill teen trite; this is not so. It's so much more. But other reviews are billing it as the Say Anything or High Fidelity of a new generation; this also isn't so. As much as I believe that Michael Cera will one day be the John Cusack of this age-group and Kat Dennings could I suppose be another Ione Skye (who guest-starred on Arrested Development, with Michael Cera) but I doubt it cause she won't drop out of the spotlight like that, this one isn't there yet. If the soundtrack had been from the indie scene of six or eight years ago, when I too was 16-18 with the world ahead of me, I might have cried. Soco Armaretto Lime, fade to black.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (the soundtrack) - this could be the next Garden State (which won a Grammy and everything), but kids today will be too hopped up on that iTunes Genesis and them Fall Out Boys to embrace it. Nick and Norah's Theme is perfect, encapsulating everything about the book, movie, and actors in 5 minutes.

Confessions of a Superhero DVD - a fascinating documentary about the people that dress up as characters in front of Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. It focuses particularly on "the original Superman," the only Batman (because he's bullied the rest away), the bustiest Wonder Woman, and the only guy dumb enough to cover himself in foam-rubber to be the Hulk in the California heat.

30 Rock Season 2 DVD Extras - I know I was ragging on this year's abbreviated seasons costing as much as the full seasons of years past, but Tina Fey and crew take care of you for your buck, with the episode of SNL that she hosted, 30 Rock Live at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, commentaries on like 5 episodes, and a table read for the funniest episode of the season!

i.TV - my new favorite iPod application. It automatically updates my calender when new episodes of my favorite shows are premiering, allows for reviews to be written from my portable device, has a movie section that cross-references tv and theater releases with showtimes (so no more Movies app), and ties it all together with a growing IMDB type interface.
