Acme E-Mail Update #5: Hellboy Day Wednesday/RIP Michael Turner

It's been an absolutely crazy week around the store! The Quarter Sale is barreling down on us, we've been sharing our Scott Pilgrim insights with the world at large, Wizard World Chicago produced too much news for our brains to comprehend, our backstock is almost completely up to date, and we still can't find anyone to drive down to South Carolina and pick up a trunk-load of fireworks for us!

Speaking of fireworks, we WILL BE CLOSED on FRIDAY, JULY 4th, in observance of Independence Day. Providing no hands have been blown off during Friday night's festivities, we will re-open on Saturday morning at 10 AM. As a result of the federal holiday and Diamond and UPS being closed, new books for the following week will ship on Thursday, July 10th!

ACME SUMMER SIDEWALK .25 CENT SALE!!!!!
Saturday, July 12th 10 AM - 7 PM

  • Over 20,000 books, just a quarter a piece! Many folks have been asking us, "is it going to be anything that I'll be interested in?" YES! End o' story.
  • For Super Saver Shopping, fill up a Diamond box (about 125 comics) for just $15, bringing the price down to just .12 cents a book!
Once again, thank Matt and Jermaine in advance for all the work they've done putting this thing together! They've been here nights, they've been here weekends, they've been here on their days off. They could have just dumped a bunch of boxes in front of you and let you have at it, but instead they've searched every nook and cranny for every book that could possibly match the sale criteria so you could have more books to choose from and put them in order by title and issue number so you'd know what you were looking at!  If you've never been to an Acme quarter sale before you don't want to miss this!

Acme and Dark Horse present...
HELLBOY DAY!!!!
Wednesday, July 2nd 10 AM -8 PM

To celebrate the release of Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Acme has teamed up with Dark Horse Comics in order to bring you a day of paranormal fun!

  • All Hellboy and BPRD trade paperbacks 20% OFF! - Hellboy is traditionally an Acme favorite, a love passed down from one employee to another. From Mike Mignola's moody art and the unspoken depths of the characters to Davis and Arcudi's respect and desire to continue the story, no adventure of Hellboy or the BPRD is to be missed, so use this opportunity to try out Seed of Destruction or pick up a volume you may not have yet.
  • Hellboy Enthusiast and local artist sensation Thomas Boatwright (Cemetery Blues, Surreal Adventures of Edgar Allan Poo) will be around in the early afternoon sharing his love of the series and probably sketching up a storm!
  • Hellboy Day exclusive reprint of the Mole - Free Comic Book Day 2008's smash hit, featuring a pre-Darkness Calls Hellboy story by Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo, a post-Killing Ground BPRD story by John Arcudi and Guy Davis, and a pre-1946 Professor Bruttenholm story by Josh Dysart and Paul Azaceta!
  • Hellboy Day exclusive bookmarks/checklists!
  • Hellboy Day exclusive posters!
  • Door Prizes and Trivia Contests - with two Hellboy Animated PVP figure sets and a Art of Hellboy paperback as the spoils!
The sales and contests will be one day only, so don't miss out on this chance at savings, booty, and a goolishy good time, and don't forget to go out and see Hellboy II: the Golden Army on July 11th!

THE LETTER OF THE WEEK IS "A" AGAIN!!!
Acme 365 Day 50% OFF Backstock Sale: July 2-8*

Has it really already been half a year? You bet! And that means that the Backstock Sale is starting over again with "A." Take this second chance as an opportunity to round out a series that you may have started or tried the first time through, get caught up on something you might have missed, or dive in for the first time, since we know some of you took a while to catch on to just how crazy this opportunity is! All letters have recently been re-stocked, so don't think for a second that just because we didn't have something the last time you checked, that means we don't have it now! Without further ado, we remind you of the greatness in the A's:

  • Action Comics - including the recent arcs by Geoff Johns such as Last Son drawn by Andy Kubert, Escape from Bizarro World drawn by Eric Powell, and the Legion of Super Heroes crossover drawn by Gary Frank!
  • Alias - by Bendis and Michael Gaydos, this is one of the best series of the decade featuring the best new character since the turn of the century, Jessica Jones!
  • All Star Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder - sometimes deadly serious, sometimes satire, always controversial!
  • Astonishing X-men - by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday, now that there's a cap on it, it can officially be said that this was the best X-Men run of the last five years and will certainly go down in history as one of the greatest runs on any book in history! Get caught up just in time to jump on the direction change as Warren Ellis and Simone Bianchi take over this week with #25!
  • Avengers - Kree/Skrull War reprints, Avengers Under Siege, Avengers Forever, West Coast Avengers, all of Kurt Busiek's vol. 3 run, New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, Avengers Initiative, Illuminati (and the Road to Civil War special) and a whole lot more goodness from Earth's Mightiest Heroes!
Honorable Mentions: Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's All Star Superman, Angel, Annihilation and Annihilation Conquest, Kurt Busiek's Astro City, Warren Ellis, Mark Millar, Bryan Hitch, and Frank Quitely's Authority, and Azrael.

*Backstock refers to back issues of comic series bagged and priced in the long boxes in the back issue room. This special weekly back issue sale does NOT apply to Silver Age comics, Back Wall comics, New issues on the shelf, Variant covers, trade paperbacks, Hardcovers, Action Figures, or Statues.

ACME NEWS

  • The Employee Picks of the Week have been elevated to a more fitting place of prominence on the New Release Shelf. Picks of the Week come with that employee's full stamp of approval, basically guaranteeing your satisfaction. COMIC NEWS

  • Michael Turner passes away - Turner was a fan favorite for his work on Witchblade for Image and his own creation, Fathom, for his company, Aspen. He was also one of the premiere cover artists of the last decade, leaving lasting impressions on the fans of Identity Crisis from DC and Civil War from Marvel. Despite his health complications, Turner was a regular on the larger convention circuit, never allowing his illness to dampen his spirits while entertaining fans.

COMIC PREVIEWS

That's the news for the week.  Also, we've been finding comic stashed around the shop from last week and our scientists are working around the clock to piece together who was behind it.  Remember you can have a copy of your list at any time and hiding comics 1) prevents people who do want things from finding them and B) really, really sticks in our collective craws.  Keep a tight list and don't be afraid to talk to the people that work here.  We're here to help.

ACME COMICS
We will not go quietly into the night! We will live on! We will survive!

Let it be known that Jermaine does not now nor has he ever endorsed Independence Day the movie.  Just saying, that's not my doing up there. Stephen loves it so much, he wants to take it out behind the middle school and get it pregnant.
